State your purpose, trust the process, surrender to the outcome.

Thoughts on abstraction 2008

Webster says~Abstraction = “not easy to understand”, to that, I say…….“Dahhhh!”

Abstract art is an artists interpretation of reality. The added stipulation that I put on the definition is that “it” (the abstraction) must have “meaning”. Scribblings or ramblings by lunatics, madmen (mad-persons), crazies, drunks or “normal” people may be and have been called abstract art but are not considered valid in my discussion. “You” or “your” is not a specific you, it is “the people”.  Your interpretation of reality can be anywhere from recognizable to unrecognizable blocks of color, lines, characters, symbols, icons, or stylizations. The interpretation you produce can be a conscious or unconscious effort of the mind/hand coordination. Often the conscious interpretation comes from the mind directed hand, or an effort can come unconsciously out of the apparently undirected hand. The tricky part comes in the “meaning”. Meaning does not necessarily need to be profound or tragic; meaning can be as simple as an attempt to create “beauty” or “ugliness” or “joy”, or more complex attempts to render your personal feeling about an object/subject.
